Women Unemployment In Sri Lanka

Image
It was surprising for me to learn the tribulations women unemployment can lead to from stress at an initial stage to major and minor crimes that consist of murders, rapes, drugs, alcohol, and bribes during my summer vacation in Sri Lanka. Just imagine if you can't pay your children’s school fees, house rent, electricity and telephone bills and if you can't feed your family, suddenly other issues become a whole lot less important to a family, especially as a woman. If you still have a job to help you to gain a decent income and you can still pay your rent or a lot more consider yourself as fortunate. women are living on the edge of financial disaster than the men. Especially after the deadly turmoil of war in Sri Lanka; women have come forward to play the roles of bread winners after the deaths of their husbands. After interviewing a couple of women on my trip to worn torn areas in Sri Lanka, I came to understand that at times it can be really easy to get caught up in the data

Screening of the Banned movie “Stoning of Soraya” Raising a voice of a woman

Using education as a tool to enhance knowledge among children and youth has become paramount in today's society. Ignorance and lack of knowledge often leads to further complication of existing problems. Below is a good example of how a simple project can impact a student community to a large extent. During the Banned Books weeks we screened a banned movie based on a true story in Iran called “The stoning of Soraya”. It was a resounding success as we showed it to over hundred students in my university. After exploring different aspects of censorship in class, my team comprising of five dynamic group of students were determined enough to draw plans to screen a movie on a controversial topic, most unlikely to be spoken of in Asian geographical boundaries; gender violence. It was indeed a tough decision we had to make after several meetings at the library and dorms till midnight, before finalizing this movie that resembled women rights violations. Finally we decided to put up a s

A struggle to save a life

The atmosphere was gloomy befitting the emotions of a young girl. She is about to undertake a life altering action, a consequence of youthful indiscretion. If the action had become public, she would have faced social ostracism in a society that places moral values on a high pedestal and was quick to pass judgment for misdemeanors such as hers. So it was imperative that she kept her identity a secret, as well as that of her destination, ostensibly a medical centre and the estate authorities that backs up this service deemed illegal by the law.            The drab facade of the building bellied the activities inside. These uneducated women risk their lives, some die and jeopardize their entire future in the process. Due to myths, cultural and religion taboos, a significant number of estate women avoid contraceptive measures and end up being pregnant, providing a stable wave of business to these illegal abortion clinics that observes no proper hygienic conditions and has

Character education is important today

Image
Schools today should taken the lead in critical and character education that aims to give students enough knowledge of what virtues and vices entail to act virtuously and discourage vice in daily life. Although it offers a vast improvement over the absence of value talk in the classroom, it is still problematic. This is because of the challenged posed on its' application where doing the right thing at the right time in the right way is essential. In order to encourage students to admit to this basic principals of moral education , teacher need the capacity of giving simple instruction. Character education accompanied by critical education is not the same kind of education  students receive in mathematics or history, where the ultimate goal is acquiring knowledge. We need to inspire students to practice and apply virtues, and in doing so, we help them run up against the messiness of life. The above video based on a training I facilitated which throws an extensive look as to how

Key difference between learning online and learning in a classroom

Let us take a look at some of the key benefits of online learning and some of the issues to consider when comparing online and face-to-face modes of learning and teaching. Flexible learning One key difference in learning online is its’ “flexibility” where one as a learner can decide when and where to participate on a particular course. Especially in countries and classrooms where formal classroom learning has become extremely difficult due to displacement or political hindrances- learning online has become a popular option. This encourages a learner to learn a language or any other topic who might otherwise not learn something new due to obstacles posed in his internal/ external environment. Online learning can be very suitable for those with busy schedules because you have the freedom to adjust your time effectively. Online learning can be learner centered and cater to a large number of learners at any given time. The students have the space to be very selective of what they w

What does learning a language mean to you?

A language is used widely to communicate with diverse groups of individuals and communities. Learning languages opens opportunities, bridges gaps between people and their environment, and, most importantly, is key in building communities and a sense of belonging to them.   Personally, I feel by learning a language, you are willing to reach out the people in that community and assures your ability   “to do” something in another language. Learning a language is very important in a globalized society as today. When I was at school, I began learning Japanese, and then French at GCSE level, and continued to study them at A-level, whilst I became quite proficient unfortunately through lack of use and integration into my daily life, my knowledge and memory of French was sunk back to a basic level of proficiency. I think this is a pretty interesting point to consider in learning languages because we can be truly multilingual, but our proficiency is determined by our environment and the fr
