But I think she had only herself to blame.’ How does Priestley present the theme of hypocrisy in An Inspector Calls ?” This question is different from the published questions from 2018–2024 . Hypocrisy has not been directly used as a main question. There is some natural overlap with: 2024 – public image 2023 – appearance and reality 2020 – selfishness 2019 – responsibility 2022 – blame However, the focus is different. The question asks students to examine the difference between what characters claim to believe and how they actually behave . The quotation from Mrs Birling gives a clear starting point and supports discussion of hypocrisy, class prejudice, responsibility and dramatic irony.
